1990
The most expensive painting in the world (at the time) was Vincent Van Gogh’s Portrait of his doctor which sold for $82.5 million at Christie’s in 1990. The purchaser was Japanese business man Ryoei Saito.

Soon after purchasing the painting, Saito threatened to have it cremated with him after his death, for to spare his heirs from having to pay an exorbitant inheritance tax. He died six years later and tha painting, Dr. Gachet, remains missing to this day.

2000 The Y2k Couple

Sally Shireman and Matt Fish were featured in a front-page Tribune photograph on New Year's Day 2000. Dubbed the Y2K couple the couple gained instant notoriety.

Unfortunately six months later as their lives took different directions and the happy couple broke up. They are now both married…. Just not to each other
